How to Calculate Hours: A Complete Guide
Calculating hours between two times or adding up time durations is essential for timesheets, payroll, project tracking, and scheduling. This calculator handles both tasks with precision.
Hours between two times: Subtract the start time from the end time, then deduct any break time. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours automatically.
Decimal hours vs. hours:minutes: Employers often need time in decimal format for payroll. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.50 decimal hours. To convert minutes to decimal, divide by 60 (30 / 60 = 0.50).
Adding multiple durations: When tracking multiple tasks or shifts, add all the minutes together, then convert. 2h 45m + 3h 30m = 6h 15m (165 + 210 = 375 minutes = 6 hours 15 minutes).
Common payroll rounding rules: Many employers round to the nearest 15 minutes (7 minutes rounds down, 8 rounds up). Some round to 6-minute increments (0.1 hours). Check your employer's policy when reporting hours.
