Tipping Etiquette: A Quick Guide
Standard tipping in the United States ranges from 15% to 25% of the pre-tax bill amount. 15% is considered acceptable for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20–25% for excellent service.
When to tip more: Large parties (6+) often have automatic gratuity of 18–20%. For exceptional service or complex orders, consider 25% or more. Delivery and takeout typically warrant 15–20%.
Splitting the bill: When splitting evenly, divide the total (including tip) by the number of people. Some groups prefer to tip individually based on what each person ordered.
Tax considerations: Tips should be calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total after tax. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax amount for the most accurate result.
